Pu Huang Tan 蒲黄炭

Properties: Sweet, Slightly astringent, Neutral.

Channels: Liver, Pericardium

Functions and indications: Once charred it is astringent in nature and better able to stop bleeding. Harmonizes the blood, stop bleeding. It is used for Hematemesis due to a lession in the vessels of the stomach with vomiting blackish blood. Hemoptysis due to heat damaging the network of the lungs with spitting up of blood or phlegm streaked with blood. Epistaxis due to heat in the liver and lungs. Bloody stools due to damp heat in the large intestine. Hematuria due to accumulation of damp heat in the bladder with dysuria. Metrorrhagia due to chong and ren not securing.

Usage and dosage: 5-10g, decoct in a packet. For external use in appropriate amounts, apply to affected area.
